A Walk Through Faith, Fables, and Heritage

The University of Mumbai’s Department of Archaeology hosted an engaging heritage walk titled “Mahim: Where Faiths, Fables, and Heritage Meet.” This enlightening experience was led by Mrs. Anita Sehhar, Head of Tourism, who guided students through the rich cultural tapestry of the Mahim area.

One of the key highlights of the heritage walk was a visit to the Dargah Hazrat Makhdum Shah Baba, affectionately known as Mahim Dargah. During the visit, students learned about the life and legacy of the revered Sufi saint Hazrat Makhdum Shah Baba, whose teachings of love, peace, and interfaith harmony continue to resonate with people today.

The students also explored the various philanthropic initiatives undertaken by the trust that manages the Dargah, contributing to community welfare and fostering a spirit of unity among diverse faiths. A significant moment of the walk was the opportunity to meet Mr. Suhail Khandwani, the managing trustee of the Dargah, who shared insights into the ongoing efforts to preserve the heritage and spiritual essence of this sacred site. He elaborated on the conservation work being carried out to maintain the Dargah’s historic architecture while also modernizing facilities to better serve devotees and visitors. Mr. Khandwani also spoke about the trust’s commitment to education, healthcare, and interfaith dialogue, emphasizing that the Dargah is not only a spiritual sanctuary but also a pillar of social responsibility. His words reinforced the Dargah’s role as a living symbol of harmony and collective heritage, leaving students inspired by the blend of tradition and forward-looking community service.
