Drugs have become one of the biggest problems in our society today, with the number of people affected by drug abuse increasing every year. We see drugs being used by people of all ages, from children to seniors. The effects can be devastating and long-term, including damaged relationships, physical and mental health problems, addiction and even death. Drug use affects not just the individual but can have a significant impact on families and entire communities as well.
The Mahim Dargah Trust has taken the initiative to spread awareness about the dangers of drug use and to provide rehabilitation services for those who are addicted. It all started when Commissioner of Police Mumbai, Mr. Rakesh Maria, visited the Mahim Dargah Trust Office in November 2014 and discussed various matters regarding the Dargah and social welfare of Mahim. One crucially important point they covered was the drug problem in and around the Mahim area. The Trustees emphasized that it is an urgent question that demands immediate attention. Mr. Rakesh Maria (Commissioner of Police Mumbai) commanded the Mahim Police Station to obliterate the drug menace in Mahim promptly, giving them additional personnel for support.
The Trustees of Pir Makhdum Saheb Charitable Trust planned an awareness program regarding drug addiction (Drug Menace Free Mumbai—Save Generation) together with the assistance and help of Father Joe, the National Program Director, Kripa Foundation, Sr. Inspector Mahim Police Station, ACP Mahim Police Station, DCP Region-V, community members, and residents of Mahim that was carried out on November 21st, 2014, at 9.00 pm, close to RC Mahim School. The program was a great success, as around 2000 people engaged enthusiastically. Moreover, the Trustees asked the principals of all the schools in Mahim to conduct special courses and counselling sessions focused on the “Drug Menace Awareness” Program for their students and guardians.
The executives formed a task force to address this situation. Pamphlets were widely distributed, and banners were put up in public areas with information on the dangerous repercussions of drugs. People interested in joining the Drug Free Mumbai effort were encouraged and aware of its importance. The telephone numbers of the Task Force provided assistance for drug abusers through their involvement in the rehabilitation program at a Rehab Center. Moreover, the Mumbai Police took stern action against 194 drug traffickers and indicted them. Numerous scholars were funded by the trust for rehabilitation, two of whom finished their program and rejoined society by taking financial responsibility via vocational direction given by the trust.
The trust thanks the Foundation for a Drug Free World, based in Los Angeles, USA, for its generous assistance by providing literature, brochures, CDs, and other components necessary to instruct people on how to combat the hazardous drugs circulating in society and their consequences on younger generations. The literature received from the Foundation for a Drug Free World is now being used to give seminars and talks in universities, schools, and institutions to educate youths about the drawbacks of using such dangerous narcotics.
